D64 HEALTHY LIVING MONTH – WEEK 1

Fruits & Vegetables Week

The focus of this first week of Healthy Living Month is nutrition!
Starting on Monday, April 2 and ending on Friday April 6, students will be challenged to eat a combined total of 5 – 8 fruits and vegetables, each day.

Students that complete each weekly challenge and submit an online pledge card (with parent verification) will be entered into a raffle to win Healthy Living Month Prizes.

Printed pledge cards are being replaced with a new digital pledge card.  To show that your student has fulfilled the healthy living pledge of the week, you will be asked to submit a digital pledge card at the end of each week.

Grade Level Recess Fun!

Grade Level Recess – Buckets of Fun

The PTO would like to help our students have fun and Bee Fit during their outdoor play time. In an effort to provide a greater variety of play options during grade-level recess, we are assembling large “Recess Buckets” (one per grade) stocked with a variety of balls and outdoor toys to be used and shared during each grade-level recess.

The PTO will be purchasing a number of different items including balls for the GaGa Pit and some Skip It toys and thought we might ask the Roosevelt community to consider donating gently used (or new) items as well.

Suggested items include:
basketballs, soccer balls, beanbags for hopscotch, playground balls for 4-square, and jump ropes.

Large red collection bins are available outside of the main office.

Girls On The Run

Roosevelt Girl Scouts Spread Kindness

Girl Scout Collection for children at Lutheran General

Roosevelt’s 5th grade Girl Scout Troop #40560 is working towards their Bronze Award – the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can achieve.  This requires them to plan and execute a service project as a troop.  These girls have decided that they want to help other children.

Specifically, they are asking fellow Roosevelt students to donate items that can be assembled into activity bags to be distributed to children at Lutheran General Hospital.

They are asking for each grade to bring a different type of toy or item that can be added to the activity bag (all items must be new):

Kindergarten – Crayons or Colored Pencils
1st Grade – Toy Cars
2nd Grade – Playdoh or Silly Putty
3rd Grade – Coloring Books
4th Grade – Small Toy Balls or Stress Balls
5th Grade – Fidget Spinners or Rubik’s Cubes

A collection box has been placed outside of the main office at school.
The Girls Scouts will be collecting donations through March 22nd.

Cultural Awareness Week Update

We are delighted to see so many families submit pictures of your family heritage!  There is a wonderful display outside the school office, and there is still time to contribute a family photo if you would like to do so next week.  Also, the Cultural Awareness Week Flyer was updated to reflect that our Friday “dress up day” provides students an opportunity to wear an outfit, which represents their own culture/heritage.

V-Show Dress Rehearsal Schedule Posted

Please be on time and please be flexible if the show is running behind. Producers and Directors work very diligently to get this schedule running as smooth as possible, but things happen! We appreciate your understanding!

Box Tops due 2/26!

It’s Box Tops Submission Time!

Please bring your Box Tops to school by Monday, February 26th.
Each Box Tops coupon is worth ten cents.

This year we have already earned over $600 for our PTO.
Let’s try to reach $1,000 by the end of the school year!

Just follow these simple steps:

1.  Clip Box Tops from participating products with the expiration date visible.

2.  Attach Box Tops to a collection sheet or place them in a zippered bag/envelope.

3.  Place Bonus Box Tops certificates in a bag or paper clip them to a collection sheet.

4.  Send the Box Tops to school with your child.

Make Your Opinion Known Again & NOW!

As you may recall, the Roosevelt construction project got the green light to go out for bid but the final construction plans have not yet been approved.

The D64 School Board will be voting on the plans at the next Board meeting:
Monday, February 26th at 7:00 p.m.

If you think this is a worthwhile improvement to our nearly 90-year old school and believe this is important, please let the Board know before the 26th!

#choosekind

#choosekind Now Happening in Classrooms!

Inspired by the movie Wonder, the Kindness Committee has brought #choosekind to our classrooms!

Each classroom has the opportunity to become “Certified Kind” by filling a classroom jar with a marble each time someone witnesses an act of kindness in their class. Once filled, photos of the jars will  be submitted to wonderkindclassroom.com to be certified as an “Official Kind” classroom AND to be eligible for prizes.

This will be ongoing through April 1st!
Be sure to ask your child about their classroom’s kind acts!

Also…stay tuned for details about a Wonder screening special for our Roosevelt students!

Roosevelt St. Baldricks Team

Roosevelt Elementary is once again taking a stand against childhood cancer and competing with other D64 schools to raise money for this great cause. Not only do you help fight childhood cancer, the money stays locally to help research here in our area! You can join the team and be a “Shavee,” or if you are not “brave” enough to shave, you can donate money with the link below. You can also show your support and join in on the fun of the shaving event at Harp & Fiddle on April 7, 2018 from 11:00-4:00 pm. There will be many family friendly events there this year and other ways for those who don’t want to shave, but want to get involved!

Sweetheart Dance Re-Scheduled for Next Friday 2/16!

As you all know, District 64 schools closed after school activities for tomorrow, Friday, February 9th which includes our Sweetheart Dance. The Dance has been re-scheduled for next Friday, February 16th from 6-8pm at Roosevelt School complete with DJ, dancing, two photo booths, food, candy and more!

If you already bought tickets, your tickets are valid for the 16th. You do not need to do anything except show up on the 16th!

If you DID NOT purchase tickets previously and would like to come on the 16th, please use the following link to the right to do so or click here. Ticket sales will be open now through Monday, February 12th. 

We hope all of you can make it next week. Please remember any treasured adult may bring your student to the dance, so if your registered adult cannot attend, please feel free to invite another adult who likes to have fun!

However, if you bought tickets previously, and you are now unable to come on the 16th, please e-mail the Roosevelt PTO at prrooseveltpto@gmail.com also by Monday, February 12th. Let us know you would like a refund. Your refund will be applied directly to your credit card, but may take a few weeks to be applied.

Please honor this firm deadline of Monday the 12th as we have many adjustments to make in order to re-schedule this event.

Cultural Awareness 3/5-3/9!

Cultural Awareness Week
March 5th – 9th

Whether your family is new to the United States or your family has been in the country for many generations, we would like to celebrate the many different and wonderful backgrounds at Roosevelt Elementary School!

March 5th – 9th will be our very first Cultural Awareness week!
We have some fun ideas planned to help everyone learn a little bit more about the cultural background in our community. We will have ethnic dancing, family roots and cultural dolls display, international morning greetings, and a traditional ethnic dress up day.

A handout with all of the details will be sent home soon.

Call for Ethnic Dancers…
We are looking for students who are interested in participating in the ethnic dancing one day during lunch time. We currently have plans to lead children in Irish and Greek dancing and we welcome volunteers to share other traditional dancing as well.

Always Choose Kind!

The Roosevelt community was very generous again this year by donating 450 sack lunches–the exact same number as last year!

Additionally, monetary donations of $240.60 were collected and given to UPM towards making sack lunches in the future.

We’d like to relay a special thank you to the Student Council for decorating the Roosevelt halls with posters about UPM and to the Kindness Committee who worked with UPM to make this event happen.

It takes a community of generous and kind-hearted people to make a difference, and today we nourished 450 stomachs. What a tremendous act of kindness by all!
