Roosevelt V-Show

WHAT IS THE V-SHOW?

WHAT IS THE V-SHOW?

The V-Show is a performance put on by the students of Roosevelt for their friends and family. The school has been putting on the V-Show since 1972. Every Roosevelt student is welcome to participate! There are no auditions and all grade levels are welcome.

The 5th grade students perform skits that thread through the show and they are “on stage” for the majority of the performance.

Students in Kindergarten through 4th grade are split into multiple groups by grade level and perform one original song with accompanying dance moves.

All students will spend several weeks practicing with their groups before the performance. Parents of participating children can volunteer as coaches for their child’s group. Each group usually has 2-3 coaches. Traditionally, the kids perform the show multiple times over the course of a long weekend. We hope to create a fun and engaging show for our students and their families.

Student Groups

K-4 Groups

Each grade level will have several groups. Groups are usually 10-12 students. Each group will be assigned a unique song with original lyrics. Parent coaches will create choreography for the song and select costumes. They will work with their group to rehearse singing, teach them the choreography and coordinate costume purchases.

5th Grade Groups

5th grade participants will break into several groups. Each will perform songs and skits. All students will sing the 5th grade songs (typically 3 songs) and the skits will be evenly distributed among each group. The goal is for each student to have about the same number of lines so everyone gets to participate equally. If we are performing live, the kids will have the option to act, be part of the crew or be part of the A/V team.

Common Questions

How will it be different in 2023?

This year, practices of the V-Show songs, dances and skits will take place at Roosevelt on Sundays in February. The actual show will take place the weekend of March 3-5. This is the same schedule we have followed in years past (except for the 2021 V-Show). We plan to host a live performance. There will be 4 shows over the course of a weekend so each group will perform 4 times. Each group will perform at all 4 shows.

In the unlikely case we cannot do a live show, we will plan a recorded performance. The audio and video recording schedule will be communicated as needed.

More information on the performance will be communicated as we get closer to the show date. All District COVID-19 protocols will be followed for practices and performances.

Does it cost money?

5th graders will purchase a 5th grade T-shirt, and contribute up to $25 for costumes and props paid directly to their coaches. There may be additional costs associated with a 5th grade after-party.

K-4 students will contribute up to $25 toward costumes and props for their group, to be paid directly to their coaches.

How should parents participate?

Parents of participating children are expected to volunteer in one of the many roles available. Serving in one of these roles provides opportunities to build relationships with other Roosevelt families and contribute to lasting memories for all student participants. No experience is necessary and all volunteers are appreciated.

We can’t do this without you!

Parent Role Descriptions

  • Skit/Song Coach

Each coach team oversees their assigned group of students from the same grade as they rehearse and film their performance. Coaches set the schedule for rehearsals, help choreograph the dancing, determine the group costume/attire and coordinate recording with the audiovisual team (if a recorded performance).

  • Assistant Producer

The ideal candidate will help with general planning and communication. The goal would be to get production experience with the possibility of taking a larger role the following year.

  • Ad Sales Coordinator

The ideal candidate can spare a few hours reaching out to local businesses to invite the purchase of advertisements for placement within the video production or a hard copy program. All funds raised will be used to support the production of the V-Show.

  • Audiovisual Technical Team

This role will vary depending on whether the performance is in-person or video. Video Performance - The audiovisual team plays a critical role in recording each group’s performance, introducing advertisements into the video, and then editing the entire project. Any recording or editing expertise or talent is welcome. In-Person Performance - The audiovisual team will handle sound and lighting for the performance and create a video feed to the 5th grade staging area in addition to any other A/V needs for live performances.

  • Stage Backdrop Design / Artwork

Design and create backdrop and necessary artwork related to the theme of the show.

  • 5th Grade Slideshow Coordinator

At the end of the show, there is traditionally a slideshow with pictures of 5th graders over the years from kindergarten to 5th grade. This person will collect the pictures and put them together into the slideshow.

  • 5th Grade T-Shirt Coordinator

The T-Shirt Coordinator will generate the contest timeline for creating the 2023 V-Show t-shirt design, will research and select an appropriate vendor, and will distribute t-shirts to 5th grade coaches.

  • Viewing Party Coordinator

Coordinate the viewing party for the show if we are not doing live performances.
